I’m not happy. I’m ecstatic.

Adjectives are one of the most important parts of the English language. They can tell other people about how we see the world.

Lots of the important and common adjectives, like happy and sad, have multiple levels.

Let’s look at some of the levels of these adjectives.

The outside circle of words are ‘mild’ emotions. These are small, soft emotions.
However the words on the middle ring are intense and strong feelings.

They each belong to their group (Happy / Sad / Angry) but have some small differences in meaning.

Here are some examples:

Glad (happy) is a feeling we have about a situation.
”He was glad that his friend passed her test.”

Gloomy (sad) has extra feelings of darkness and quietness.
”She felt gloomy and sat in her bedroom all day.”

You don’t need to learn all the vocabulary, but it’s useful to learn these kind of words.
We can use them to clearly and accurately describe our emotions.
