Have something done

Do you cut your own hair?

Most people don’t.

It’s normal for people to go to a salon or barber shop and pay someone to cut their hair.

———

When we organize/ask (and usually pay) someone to do something for us, we use ‘have + object + V3’ to talk about it.

“I have my hair cut at that shop”

have + object + V3

Compare:

I painted my nails yesterday (I did it myself)

I had my nails painted yesterday (I paid someone to do it for me)

———

Notes:

  • We can use ‘get’ instead of ‘have’ (e.g. “I want to get my house cleaned”)

  • We can use these phrases in any tense (e.g. “I will be having my car repaired next Thursday”)

  • You can add “by…” to talk about the person/people who will do the task (e.g. “I had my hair cut by Sarah”
